EXCESSIVE SWEATING - MIRADRY™

What is Miradry?

Miradry™ is a procedure that can be used in order to treat excessive sweating, more specifically primary axillary hyperhidrosis. It does so by destroying the sweat glands founds beneath the skin of your underarms. Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), affects up to 3% of Canadians according to the Canadian Dermatology Association. If underarm excessive sweating is affecting your daily living activities, the Miradry™ may be an appropriate solution for you.

How does Miradry work?

Miradry™ works by using microwaves, which are a type of electromagnetic wave. These waves can penetrate the skin in order to destroy the sweat glands found beneath it. When the microwaves reach the sweat glands, they cause them to heat up, which eventually destroys them permanently. As such, results after your Miradry treatment will last indefinitely! After the recommended 2 treatments, you will be able to see up to an 82% reduction in your sweat production. However, you will be able to discuss any of your specific, realistic expectations with your doctor during your consultation prior to undergoing any treatment.

Although sweating is necessary for maintaining normal body function, your underarms only house about 2% of your body’s sweat glands. There is therefore no danger in eliminating them. The other millions of sweats glands found all over your body are enough for maintaining you in good health.

Miradry™ can only target underarm sweat glands that are found between 2 to 5 mm beneath the skin’s surface. If your sweat glands are too deep beneath your skin, or not deep enough, then it is possible that this treatment will not provide you with very significant results. It is also possible for some individuals to have sweat glands that are resistant to this treatment. As such, this treatment will not provide you with any benefits. If this is a concern for you, you may have a discussion with your doctor.

What can I expect during the procedure?

Your Miradry sessions may last between 1 to 2 hours. During the length of your session, you will be in a reclined position. Prior to commencing the Miradry procedure, your doctor will apply a numbing agent to your underarms to prevent any discomfort. The handheld applicator will then be placed on your armpit. There will be a slight suction as a vacuum pulls your underarm’s skin into the device. Then, there will be a simultaneous release of microwaves to destroy the sweat glands, and a cooling to protect the outer layer of your skin. It is recommended to undergo 2 treatments at an interval of 3 months in order to have the best results. It may be necessary to undergo a third treatment if you still experience marked sweating. You will be able to discuss this possibility with your doctor, if it is necessary.

There will be almost no downtime following your Miradry treatment. You will be able to return to your daily living activities immediately. After several days, it will be possible for you to continue any vigorous activity or exercise.

Does Miradry have cause side effects?

Following Miradry treatment, patients will typically experience some discomfort that can easily be treated using over the counter pain medication and ice packs. Some swelling in the underarm area may also occur, however this will subside with 1 to 2 weeks on its own. This will only last for a few days following the procedure. It is possible that you may experience some short-term alteration in the sensation of your skin at or around the treated area. This does gradually disappear. Other side effects may include and numbness and tingling at and around the treated area which may last up to 5 weeks. Specifications about side effects will be given to you by your doctor before any treatment is undertaken.

How long will the results lasts?

Miradry™ permanently destroys underarm sweat glands found beneath the skin. Results are therefore permanent, although they will vary from patient to patient depending on the severity of the hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and the characteristic of the sweat glands targeted.

Is Miradry for everyone?

Miradry™ is a generally safe procedure. It is for adults more than 18 years of age. Miradry will only work for individuals whose sweat glands meet the criteria that make them good targets for Miradry.

Miradry is not for individuals with:

  • Pacemakers or other implants
  • A need for supplemental oxygen
  • A resistance or allergy to local anesthetics, such as lidocaine.

Please note that if you experience hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) in other areas of your body, such as your hands or feet, it cannot be treated using Miradry. Miradry is specifically targeted for primary axillary hyperhidrosis. Other treatment such as Botox or antiperspirant can be used for those areas.
