WHAT EXACTLY IS FILLER?

As we age, or skin loses fat and collagen, which makes it appear less full, and causes it to lose its elasticity. Filler injections (hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers) can be used to lessen the appearance of static wrinkles, which are wrinkles that appear due to this aging process and gravity. Dynamic wrinkles, which are wrinkles that appear over time due to making facial expressions, are better treated with procedures like Botox (Dysport, Xeomin). Fillers (hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers) can also be used to add volume to your facial structures, such as filling in hollowed cheeks (cheek injections), under eye fillers, lip injections (lip fillers) or acne scars.

HOW IS FILLER PERFORMED?

There are different types of dermal fillers that exist, however the fillers used by Dr. Doumit are hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate or sugar produced naturally by your body. It can be found in different types of tissue, especially in cartilage, a type of connective tissue. Hyaluronic acid fillers come in different consistencies, depending on the type of treatment you wish to receive. This is because the fillers’ consistency can be felt under the skin. Fillers that have a less dense, jelly-like consistency are called light fillers. These are ideal for superficial lines, or for use in areas where the skin is thinner. Light fillers (hyaluronic acid) have a softer and more natural consistency, and are ideal in these cases are there will be less skin covering them and masking their texture. Hyaluronic acid Fillers with a denser consistency are called thick fillers. These are best for injection deeper under the skin and for volume restoration (cheek injections, chin injections, jawline injections). They can be used to shape the chin and cheeks, or fill in deeper wrinkles such as the nasolabial folds or “smile lines”. Your doctor will be able to tell you exactly which type of dermal filler (hyaluronic acid: Juvederm, Restylane, Voluma, Volbella, Kiss …) they will be able to use during your consultation.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY WITH FILLER INJECTION?

Although injections are not painful, in order to avoid any discomfort, the doctor may apply some numbing cream or use a local anesthetic before beginning the procedure. Once started, the session may last between 10 to 30 minutes. You will be laying down on your back during the length of the session. Using a thin needle, the doctor will inject the product along the length of the targeted area. The thickness of the needle will depend on the thickness of the filler (hyaluronic acid) that will be used. After the product is injected, the doctor will massage it to move it into place, to spread it more evenly and to reduce any bumps. After the procedure, you will be able to see results immediately. You will not require any downtime and will be able to leave right away. You will need to take certain precautions, such avoiding alcohol and the sun, as well as avoiding moving your face for a few hours. Your doctor will communicate to you any important information regarding the precautions you will need to take. It is possible that you make need to schedule and appointment for touch-ups in order to achieve your desired results. This may be discussed with your doctor.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS FROM A FILLER TREATMENT?

It is possible that you will have some swelling, bruising, redness and/or itchiness in the area of the injections. These will resolve themselves over time. Other side effects, such as infection or the appearance of nodules (granulomas) may be treated by a doctor. Although rare, it is possible for the filler to accidentally enter and occlude a blood vessel, cutting off blood supply and causing tissue death (necrosis). If you notice any abnormal symptoms after your procedure, it is important to immediately seek medical attention.

WILL I BE ABLE TO MAKE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AFTER FILLER INJECTIONS?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance produced by the body, and as such, it can be broken down. Results are therefore not permanent. The length of time during which results will last depends on the type of hyaluronic acid filler used. Light fillers may last up to 6 months, whereas thick hyaluronic acid fillers may last 1 or 2 years. It will be possible for you to schedule new appointments if you wish to maintain your results.

Are fillers for everyone?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are generally safe. However, you must inform your doctor of any medical conditions you may have (including cold sores, as filler may reactivate these), as well as any medications you may be taking. This is to ensure that the procedure is safe for you.
You may not receive hyaluronic acid fillers if:
• You have an infection in the area you wish to treat
• You have an allergy to any of the components of the filler
• You take NSAIDS (e.g. aspirin)
• You have problems with coagulation or hemostasis or consume supplements that affect coagulation and hemostasis.
