What Exactly is Botox?

Botox® is a type of injection that helps reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles on the face by relaxing facial muscles. The main types of wrinkles treated are crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles, however it can also be used for vertical lines around the lips and mouth, as well as neck bands.

Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that appear on the face when you make facial expressions. As you age, your skin loses its elasticity and thus its ability to bounce back after it has been pulled by the muscle beneath it. Botox is less effective for treatment of static wrinkles, which appear due to the skin’s aging process and gravity. These wrinkles are better addressed using dermal fillers.

How does Botox work?

Botox® is the name given to commercial brand botulinum toxin, which comes from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. (other commercial products exist such as Dysport®, Xeomin®) This protein acts at the microscopic level at the points where your nerves meet your muscles, called neuromuscular junctions. When a nerve wants to make a muscle contract, it releases a chemical called acetylcholine. The acetylcholine molecules will travel from the nerve to the muscle through the neuromuscular junction and, by binding to the muscle, cause it to contract. Botulinum toxin prevents this process from occurring by binding to proteins in the nerve responsible for aiding in the release of acetylcholine and disabling them. That way, the muscle no longer receives any signal to contract and relaxes.

When the facial muscles relax, the skin they pull will also relax, which helps reduce the appearance of the dynamic wrinkles that have accumulated over time. It can take up to 2 weeks for you to see the final, full effect of the procedure. It is possible that you may need multiple treatments in order to achieve your desired results. During your consultation with your doctor, you will able to discuss your expectations and receive more information on how many visits you may need.

What can I expect during Botox injection?

A Botox® session usually lasts from 15 to 30 minutes. It will not be necessary for you to receive anesthesia, but the doctor may apply some numbing cream over the targeted area prior to beginning to procedure. A thin needle will then be used to inject the Botox product into the muscles the doctor will have deemed necessary to treat in order for you to get the results you want.

You will not require any bedrest after your procedure, and you may leave as soon as it is done! It will be important for you to take some precautions, however, such as not engaging in any strenuous exercise for 24 hours. You should also avoid rubbing the treated area to make sure you do not cause any alterations to the treatment’s effects by making the product move. The specific precautions you will need to take will be given to you by your doctor to ensure you get the best results possible!

Does Botox have any side effects?

Although Botox® is a toxin, it rarely has any severe side effects. Most frequently, patients experience some redness, bruising, and swelling in the areas where the injection was given, but these will subside on their own within a couple of days. Pain is usually very mild, and if it leads to any discomfort, it can be treated with over-the-counter medications. It is possible that the toxin reaches muscles outside of the area you wanted treated and relaxes them as well, but this will also resolve on its own.

Side effects such as difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing can become severe and be serious. If you experience these or any other symptoms that you feel are abnormal, it is important to seek medical attention right away.

How long Botox last?

Botulinum toxin can be broken down by your body. As such, your results will be temporary. On average, results can last up to 4 months. It will be possible for you to book follow-up appointments if you wish in order to maintain your results. You may discuss with your doctor the time interval at which you will be able to schedule these additional sessions.

Is Botox for everyone?

Botox is for individuals who wish to diminish the appearance of their dynamic wrinkles. Other methods, such as dermal fillers, are better suited for the treatment of static wrinkles. Although it is easier to treat wrinkles at an earlier age, before they have become significantly deep, you cannot receive Botox if you are under 18 years old.

You cannot receive Botox injections if you:

  • Have infections in the area you wish to have treated, including acne
  • Have allergies to botulinum toxin
  • Have conditions affecting your muscles (e.g. Myasthenia Gravis, ALS, etc.)
  • Are pregnant (or breastfeeding)
  • Are currently taking muscle relaxants
  • Have taken antibiotics in the week before your session
  • Have a UTI or problems controlling your bladder

You will have the opportunity to discuss your medical history and any medications you take with your doctor prior to commencing any Botox treatments to ensure the procedure is safe for you.
